Sketchbook

The idea of this sketchbook page is to give a taste of how my sketches turn into full blown paintings within the sketchbook.  It doesn't matter how hard I try, I always feel that I need to finish the drawing.  One day I will manage to use my sketchbook for rough sketches and ideas.
To purchase any of this artwork please email or message me using the links below.
The following six pictures are painted on A5 130gsm cartridge paper.  Although originally from my sketchbook, these have been mounted in card and are ready to be framed, please email me if you wish to purchase any of these.  Thanks
These prints were created using the Cyanotype print process, creating the blue images.

This smaller print was the test strip but it came out so well, I kept it.

The is the full image, of Angelina's Twins, but when I exposed this picture I timed it to 10 minutes in the sun, the first one was more guesswork as I had not done this before.
Next time I will expose the image a little longer giving it a darker tone.

Aquatinted elephant scene to gain tone, then sugar lift was applied in layers to create greater tones and shadows.

This was the first experiment with sugarlift and the results aren’t quite what I had in my head but it gave me a greater understanding of what can be achieved using this technique.

The sugarlift workshop gave me the knowledge to see how sugarlift could be used to enhance an etched plate or create a plate just using sugarlift.
This plate was created from a blank aluminium plate just using sugarlift.
They are called “Snowflake” as this is what the image was supposed to be, but as I didn’t have a fine brush on me, it didn’t work and turned into to this abstract instead. But, by creating sections, this was the precursor to the New Horizons picture.
The plate was printed in black and red to try to gain a two tone colour which has a cool rusty look to it.

The Acacia Tree viscosity print was an experiment, it was very late in the day and I had loads of cleaning up to do so instead of being vigilant and cleaning the roller between colours, I just went from one to the other, the results are a little muddy but I still like the effect.

Two mono prints of Ralph's Wood in East Brent, Somerset. The lighter on was the second print from the plate.
I couldn't resist adding some colour in there, but there was a little too much and it squidged a bit.

This acrylic print collage was an experiment with home mono printing using acrylic paint, the experiment was not a success as the paint dried too quickly, but when the image was sectioned and re-arranged, the overall image was much better. This gave me the confidence to try this collage above using all the old work from across my time at university.

Following a visit to the Cardiff Museum, I came across a sculpture by
David Nash, which I sketched.  In the same room were Welsh artists, some unknown with paintings of the Welsh mountains, on my train ride home, I started to doodle with watercolours and came up with this mixture of sculpture and Welsh mountains.  The sculpture reminded me of a ploughed field.

This cottage really struck me after seeing it in a magazine, I added my own tweaks and colours but it was really fun to produce. I think this one might just make it to a canvas after all.
